underground: water drainholes
Mines often encounter nearby abandoned mines that are in the same coalbed or overlying or underlying coalbeds. Some of these mines have flooded since abandonment. Federal regulations do not permit mining under perched water- such as a flooded mine and these must be drained to permit mining. When not flooded, an underlying abandoned mine can function as an easy, economical water disposal reservoir for an active mine.
Target’s directional drilling capability provides an economical and versatile means to place water drainage boreholes in advantageous locations to transport and control water flow for in-seam situations or between overlying or underlying abandoned mines. Many of these sites can be reached from outcrops. Others can be accessed from underground. The links below are some of the in mine applications.
